Community College Pathways
At Barwon Learning Centre, we are committed to preparing students for life beyond school by providing meaningful pathways into further education, training and employment. Through our partnership with the local Community College, students have access to a range of accredited and non-accredited short courses that develop practical skills, build confidence and introduce them to future career opportunities.
These courses allow students to explore areas of interest while gaining valuable hands-on experience in real-world learning environments. Whether developing workplace skills, gaining industry knowledge or achieving recognised certifications, students are supported to identify their strengths and make informed decisions about their future.
Participating in Community College programs also helps students build independence, responsibility and self-confidence. By learning alongside members of the wider community, students strengthen their communication skills, expand their aspirations and experience success beyond the traditional classroom.
As part of Barwon Learning Centre's personalised approach to learning, Community College pathways create opportunities for students to engage in purposeful education that reflects their individual goals, interests and strengths. By connecting students with further learning and vocational opportunities, we are helping them build the skills, confidence and ambition to succeed in their chosen pathways.
Horse-Led Learning
At Barwon Learning Centre, we believe some of life's most valuable lessons happen beyond the classroom. Our Horse-Led Learning program at Ashley, NSW provides students with the opportunity to connect with horses in a calm, supportive and natural environment, promoting confidence, resilience and emotional wellbeing.
Working alongside experienced facilitators, students engage in ground-based activities such as grooming, leading and caring for horses. No riding is involved. Through these experiences, students develop trust, communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving and leadership skills while building meaningful connections with both the horses and those around them.
Horses are highly intuitive animals that respond honestly to human emotions and behaviours, encouraging students to become more self-aware, regulate their emotions and develop positive relationships. For many young people, the peaceful rural setting offers a safe space to slow down, reflect and experience success in new and meaningful ways.
As part of Barwon Learning Centre's strengths-based and trauma-informed approach, Horse-Led Learning supports students to build confidence, strengthen resilience and reconnect with learning through authentic, hands-on experiences. It is one of the many ways we nurture the wellbeing, growth and potential of every student.
Boxing at Chalkies
Boxing at Chalkies is more than a fitness program—it's an opportunity for students to build discipline, determination and self-belief in an environment built on respect and encouragement. Each session challenges students both physically and mentally, helping them discover what they are capable of achieving through commitment and perseverance.
Under the guidance of experienced coaches, students learn fundamental boxing techniques while developing fitness, coordination, focus and self-control. The emphasis is never on aggression, but on respect, resilience and personal growth. Every challenge is an opportunity to build confidence, manage emotions and celebrate individual progress.
For many of our students, boxing provides a positive outlet for energy while reinforcing the importance of routine, accountability and healthy choices. The supportive environment encourages students to push beyond perceived limits, embrace challenges and develop a strong sense of pride in their achievements.
Through our partnership with Chalkies, Barwon Learning Centre continues to create opportunities that promote physical health, emotional wellbeing and lifelong skills. The lessons learned in the gym—respect, persistence, courage and resilience—are the same qualities our students carry back into the classroom, their families and the wider community.
Tracing Family Histories with the Diyaan Centre
Understanding where we come from is a powerful step towards understanding who we are. Through our partnership with the Diyaan Centre in Moree, students are supported to explore their family histories, strengthen their cultural identity and deepen their connection to Country, community and culture.
Working alongside knowledgeable staff from the Diyaan Centre, students have the opportunity to research family connections, learn about local Aboriginal history and hear stories that celebrate the resilience, strength and achievements of their ancestors. This journey of discovery helps students develop a greater sense of belonging, pride and identity while recognising the important role their families play in shaping who they are today.
The program provides a culturally safe space where students can ask questions, share stories and connect with their heritage in meaningful ways. By understanding their past, students are empowered to build confidence in their future and develop a stronger appreciation of their place within their family and community.
At Barwon Learning Centre, we recognise that cultural identity is central to wellbeing, engagement and educational success. Our partnership with the Diyaan Centre reflects our commitment to embedding Aboriginal perspectives throughout learning and creating opportunities for every student to celebrate their culture, honour their history and walk proudly in their identity.
PCYC Gymnastics
Physical activity plays an important role in supporting student wellbeing, confidence and engagement. Through our weekly partnership with PCYC Moree, students participate in structured gymnastics sessions that encourage them to challenge themselves, develop new skills and experience success in a fun and supportive environment.
Led by qualified instructors, the program focuses on building fundamental movement skills, coordination, balance, strength and flexibility while promoting teamwork, perseverance and resilience. Students are encouraged to set personal goals, celebrate their achievements and develop confidence through positive, achievable challenges.
Weekly participation in gymnastics also supports emotional regulation, concentration and overall wellbeing. The structured environment provides opportunities for students to build trusting relationships, practise respectful communication and develop the confidence to step outside their comfort zones in a safe and encouraging setting.
As part of Barwon Learning Centre's strengths-based and trauma-informed approach, our partnership with PCYC Moree promotes healthy lifestyles, positive connections and lifelong skills that extend well beyond the gym. Through movement, encouragement and achievement, students continue to strengthen their physical, social and emotional wellbeing while building confidence in themselves and their ability to succeed.
