Wellbeing
At Barwon Learning Centre, we understand that student behaviour and how they engage with school often reflect deeper experiences and needs, not just what we see on the surface. We focus on understanding behaviour as language.
Our wellbeing program is responsive and evolves each year to meet the needs of our student cohort. The Barwon Learning Centre team meets weekly to review student wellbeing and engagement. We work closely with families and external agencies to ensure each student receives the right support. Each student has an individualised Personalised Learning Pathways Plan (PLP), developed in collaboration with the student, staff, and their family, with clear goals that support social and emotional learning, academic progress, and personal growth.
The Department of Education is committed to providing quality learning opportunities for children and young people. These opportunities support wellbeing by building positive and respectful relationships and helping students feel like they belong at school, in the community, and beyond.
The Wellbeing Framework for Schools guides how schools support the mental, physical, social, and emotional, growth of students. It helps students connect with others, succeed in their learning, and thrive throughout their education.
How we support student wellbeing
Our wellbeing programs focus on building resilience, managing emotions, creating respectful relationships, and developing a strong community. These programs include activities that promote mindfulness, social skills, and physical health.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
